When you go through life, you will at some point in life face great challenges. It is how you deal with the challenges that will matter the most. Some people just will not be able to get over the challenges and it will affect the rest of their lives. So how do you develop the mental toughness to get through those challenging times?

One of the things that you need to do when faced with adversity is to have a positive attitude. This is the most difficult thing that you can do. When you are so upset, it is difficult to think positively. What you need to do is compartmentalize your feelings. I know this sounds cold but sometimes that is the only way that you can deal with situations like this. Look for what is good that you can take away from the situation. Try to think of what you do best and how you can get over the situation relying on your strengths.

Another thing that you can do is to be calm. Do not let the situation make you frantic and upset. When you are frantic and upset, you will not be able to think clearly and in a rational manner. You will need your wits about you to handle the situation. This is easier said than done. Most of the time when something terrible happens, you want to react with emotion. Take a few deep breaths and think things over carefully before you take any kind of action. The calmness will help you make the appropriate decisions.

You will also need to have tons of self-control. Many people just lose it and start screaming at others. You have to keep your emotions in check. Do not get angry at anyone. Don’t let the situation control you. Think about the consequences of your action. Then plan accordingly. What you say or don’t say will affect the situation whatever that situation may be. Take your emotion out of it.

Those who are really good in dealing with life’s challenges are those who have a go-getter attitude. This means that they will be ready to do what is necessary in order to overcome the situations. These are the problem solvers who are able to look at the situation and come up with solutions or actions that can help alleviate the situation. There are not many people who are able to do this. So one thing that you can do is look at the situation and think about what you can do to resolve it. What plans can be put in place so that it will become better.

You also have to be motivated. If you lose motivation, then you will give up and will not want to pursue it any more. It is just like falling off a horse. When you fall off the first time and you are not seriously injured, what will you do. Are you motivated enough to get back on the horse or do you give up horse back riding forever? So you will need the motivation to try again or to try in a different way. You must never give up. Keep working on it until you succeed.

You also have to be real. You can look at a situation and sometimes you may find that others may be offering your platitudes or unrealistic solutions to make you feel better. However, you need to be realistic. If your business has failed for example, what will it take for you to restart it. If you have no money at all, where will you get it? Do you even want to relaunch the same business. If the business did not succeed, what was the cause of the failure. Once you get to the root cause, you will then be able to decide if you want to relaunch or put your energies elsewhere. Sometimes it is better to let it go and start fresh.

None of the things that I have talked about here are easy things to do. Some people have the natural ability to do it whereas for others, it has to be learned. Sometimes the choices you make when you are younger can affect the situation and the person that you are today. Trying to change yourself is not going to be easy.
