Story of Shiv devotee Vidyapati (Hindi poet)

Vidhyapati is one of the greatest Devotee of Lord Shiva,He used to write poems and say that whatever poems he writes is the Prasada is Shiva, On seeing his simple, pure, selfless devotion the Lord himself could not live without Vidhyapati.

One day the Lord took the form of a poor, illiterate man and came to the door of Vidhyapati. The Lord introduced himself as Ugna, He asked Vidhyapati too keep him with him and he also said that he will do all the household works.

Vidhyapati was himself poor, he didn't had money to pay Ugna, But Ugna was very stubborn, he said Vidhyapati to not pay him and give him only 2 meals a day.

Vidhyapati's wife accepted to keep Ugna in the house for the household work. The Lord used to do all the household work and serve Vidhyapati.

Vidhyapati's was known for his Poems, Once the King of that place asked Vidhyapati to come to his Palace and narrate him some of his Poems.

Vidhyapati took Ugna as his companion and started to travel to the King's Palace, the way to the Palace was deserted and the Sun was shinning bright. Vidhyapati was thirsty and asked Ugna to bring some water, Ugna walked some distance and came to his real form. The Lord opened his Locks of hair and filled the water pot with the water of Ganges, and offered it to Vidhyapati.

Vidhyapati drank the Water and he got to know that the Water is of Ganga, and he knew that there is no Ganga in that Place.

He asked Ugna who is he, and cried to show his real form, Ugna started making stories, but Vidhyapati was not ready to believe it, all of a sudden Vidhyapati called Ugna, Hey Mahadev!, and caught hold of the feet of the Lord, then Ugna came to his real form of Shiva, Vidhyapati sang the glories is Shiva then he started crying loudly as he made the Lord to do his household works, Lord Shiva said him that he enjoyed serving, wanted to stay with him but asked Vidhyapati that he should not reveal the Identity of Ugna to anybody, Vidhyapati accepted, and the Lord stayed with Vidhyapati.Vidhyapati without asking received the most precious boon.

One day Vidhyapati's wife Shushila, said Ugna to do some work, Ugna finished it, but Shushila was not satisfied and started beating Ugna with a piece of burning wood, Vidhyapati saw that and screamed “ You fool He is none other than Shiva”. Shiva vanished that second and reached his abode Kailasha.

Vidhyapati started searching Shiva like a mad, he left his house and searched Shiva everywhere by screaming ' Ugna kaha ho tum' ( where are you Ugna ).

Lord Shiva felt pity on him and appeared before him, Lord Shiva said “ I can't live with you in the form of Ugna anymore as you have revealed my identity but I will stay here in the form of Linga.” After saying this There appeared a Linga and Vidhyapati named it as Ugna Mahadev.

You can still see the Linga in Bhavanipur of Bihar.

May Lord Mahadeva be appeased!
